Bouncer Background Checks

A new law is up for vote in New York that affects bars and clubs who employ bouncers or doormen.  The law requires all bouncers to go through a criminal history background check, and for the state liquor authority to establish a certification program for bouncers.

The bar or nightclub is responsible for the cost for the background check.  The bill also defines a bouncer as: "a person employed by an on-premises retail licensee where the principal basis for such person's employment is to generally keep the peace upon the licensed premises of such licensee, or to screen potential customers for suitable attire or clothing."

What do you think?  Is this a good idea?
